Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft decides in favour of CIM DATABASE

Bremen, March 26th 2007 – The Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbH (AVG) located in Karlsruhe will implement CIM DATABASE as a data management system for MicroStation for the planning and construction departments. Thereby, CONTACT Software gains a new customer, which is an expample for a lot of other cities nationally and internationally. As the first local traffic company, AVG has realized a dual city railway system which has lead to an enourmous increase in passengers. Internationally, the concept has become known as „Karlsruher Modell“ or “Tram-Train”.

Chief attraction of the Karlsruher Modell is the seamless link of the inner-city tram and the railway system of the Deutsche Bahn (long distance traffic). Passengers do not need to change trains if they want to travel from fringes of Karlsruhe into the city and vice versa. The trains drive as normal rail until they reach the suburban area, change to trams to subsequently supply the fringes of the city. The coaches use two electricity systems: within the tram network of Karlsruhe 750 Volt and after having changed into electrified line sections 15kV, 16,7 Hertz AC voltage.

Founded in 1957, AVG belongs to 100% to the city of Karlsruhe and operates the city railway traffic and a part of the coach traffic of the Karlsruhe region, as well as commercial transport on roads and railway systems. Due to the continuous expansion of the railway system and the consolidation of timetables, also the number of passengers increased: from ca. 6mn passengers in 1960 up to 63mn in 2005.
